St. John’s Lutheran Church of Highland offers Educational Classes for all age groups.
Pre-School and Early Elementary Christian Education
We offer classes for the youngest of our faithful church members. Our classes are separated by age and accommodate a combined class for 2 through 5-year-olds, and a combined class for 1st through 4th graders. We use the Group series for these education classes which is a great program. This series explores the Bible through stories, games, crafts and art projects designed to help the youth learn about the Bible and begin to grow in their faith.
Elementary through Middle School Christian Education
These educational offerings are designed for later Elementary School and early Middle School students, 5th and 6th Grade. We use the Witness Program for these pre-Confirmation students. Every session has three clearly stated goals — know, grow, and show — that carry out the Witness theme and broaden both teachers’ and learners’ understanding of the story. The goals match the characteristics of a witness and the job of witnessing. A witness is someone who KNOWS the Word, GROWS in Faith and SHOWS Service to others.
Confirmation Classes
The focus of our 7th and 8th graders is preparation for Confirmation. Our two Pastors and a group of dedicated adult leaders teach these classes. We focus on the continued growth of the students in their knowledge of the Christian Faith and the Lutheran principles, the growth of the students in their personal Faith and the preparation for each student to reaffirm their baptism. Each student is presented with a new Student Study Bible and the Luther Small Catechism Handbook. Several service projects are performed and many group activities are scheduled, such as sleepovers, game nights, movies, pizza parties and many other great events.
High School Christian Education
Our curriculum includes lectures, small group sessions, service projects and fellowship activities for all confirmed youth. The program is designed to allow these young adult members to grow in their faith, expand their knowledge of the scripture and make lifelong friends in the church. Every three years, we send a team of these students to the ELCA Youth Gathering at various location around the country to share in service projects, educational opportunities and fellowship with other Lutheran High School students. All attendees attest that it is a life-changing event.
Adult Education
St. John’s offers a variety of Christian Education for adults. It is a great way for adults of all ages to grow in their faith while the kids are attending Sunday School. We currently offer an Adult “Christian Living” Bible Study. This course is an instructor-led Bible Study that uses scripture as the basis to help us share our experiences and be better parents, children and friends. Sometimes it helps to listen as others share their experiences in making tough decisions and keeping their lives in balance.
