Today we hear the old familiar story of Jesus calling the first disciples, and one of the first things that strikes people about this story is that as Jesus walks along the Sea of Galilee and tells Simon and Andrew, James and John to follow him and fish for people, they simply drop what they are doing and follow him. While we at times can struggle with being as spontaneous as those first disciples were when we are called by Christ, today’s story reminds us that as we respond to God’s call to follow we are not walking alone, but rather Christ is with us, showing us the way, and being present with us to cling to and trust in times of need.
