Today we have a Gospel lesson that speaks to our calling as Christians to be humble and welcoming. At the beginning of our lesson we are reminded by Jesus that any time is a good time to help those in need as Jesus heals on the Sabbath. And then Jesus reminds us that it is better to be humble so that we can be exalted. But then Jesus ties his advice back to his healing on the Sabbath by reminding the one who invited him to eat that he shouldn’t invite those who can repay him, but rather he should invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind, because they cannot repay.
