Today we hear the parable of the fig tree in Luke, where the owner of the fig tree wants to cut it down because it has not produced any fruit in three years, but the gardener advocating on its behalf and asks for one more year of nurturing to see if it will respond. As we journey through Lent it is a good time for us to acknowledge our need for God’s grace, and it is a good time for us to be self-aware and self-reflective to see the things in our lives that we need to change in order that we might better follow God’s call. When we do this, we can take comfort in the fact that we do not go through this process alone, but Christ is there with us as our nurturer, our gardener, advocating on our behalf and helping us to grow, and finally bringing us from death to new life when things are out of our hands.
