One of the most important jobs that we have as Christians is to be Christ’s presence in the world. And while sometimes acts of grace are needed, for example, feeding the hungry, as we heard as a prelude to our lesson from 1 Kings, there are many times when simply being by one’s side is comforting and hopeful in and of itself. Jesus’ presence with Paul turned him from being a persecutor of the faith to a promoter of it, and the people in the funeral procession with the widow at Nain brought her the comfort of the community, as well as the reminder of God’s presence with her, which was then made manifest in Jesus’ himself.
