Today we hear a story about Jesus reading Isaiah in the synagogue and telling those present that the scripture was fulfilled in their hearing that day. What we begin to realize in Jesus is that by his presence with us we know good news in the midst of our poverty, we are free even if we are captive or oppressed, we can see even if we are blind, because the Lord’s favor is with us in Christ. He brings us hope for the day when we can love God and love our neighbors as ourselves in all its fullness, and he strengthens us to wait and work for that day with hope, knowing that we have been called to be Christ in the world today.
